Potassium carbonate (K2CO3) is a white salt that is soluble in water but not ethanol and creates a strongly alkaline solution. It can be produced as a byproduct of the absorbent reaction of potassium hydroxide with carbon dioxide. It has a high capacity to absorb moisture.
Store in a closed original container at temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. Store away from direct sunlight and moisture.Provide adequate ventilation and appropriate extraction when dust is generated. Work in a fume cupboard.
It is a colorless crystalline solid that melts at 318 °C (604 °F) without decomposition, and with a boiling point of 1,388 °C (2,530 °F). It is highly soluble in water, with a lower solubility in polar solvents such as ethanol and methanol. NaOH is insoluble in ether and other non-polar solvents.
