Caustic Potash lye Structure
Solid KOH crystallises in the NaCl crystal structure at higher temperatures. The OH group is either quickly or randomly disordered, resulting in a spherical anion of radius 1.53 (between Cl and F in size). The OH groups are ordered at room temperature, and the environment around the K+ centres is distorted, with K+OH distances ranging from 2.69 to 3.15 depending on the orientation of the OH group. KOH crystallises into a succession of crystalline hydrates, including the monohydrate KOH H2O, dihydrate KOH 2H2O, and tetrahydrate KOH 4H2O.
