Acrylic acid (IUPAC: propenoic acid) is a carboxylic acid having the formula CH2=CHCOOH. It is the most basic unsaturated carboxylic acid, with a vinyl group immediately attached to a carboxylic acid terminal. This colourless liquid has a distinct acrid or tart odor. Water, alcohols, ethers, and chloroform are all miscible with it. Every year, over a million tonnes are produced.
Acrylic acid is severely irritating and corrosive to the skin and the respiratory tract. Eye contact can result in severe and irreversible injury. Low exposure will cause minimal or no health effects, while high exposure could result in pulmonary edema.
It is a colorless crystalline solid that melts at 318 °C (604 °F) without decomposition, and with a boiling point of 1,388 °C (2,530 °F). It is highly soluble in water, with a lower solubility in polar solvents such as ethanol and methanol. NaOH is insoluble in ether and other non-polar solvents.
