How polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is made?
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is synthesized through a two-stage polycondensation process
involving the following key components:
Monomers:
Purified terephthalic acid (PTA): This is the primary source of the aromatic ring structure in PET.
Ethylene glycol (EG): This diol acts as the linking agent between the terephthalate units.
Reaction:
Esterification or Transesterification: The first stage involves the reaction between PTA and EG. Traditionally, esterification with water as a byproduct occurs. However, transesterification with dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and methanol as a byproduct is becoming more common due to its efficiency.
Polycondensation: In the presence of a catalyst (often antimony or titanium compounds), the remaining hydroxyl groups on EG react with the carboxylic acid groups on PTA or DMT, eliminating water or methanol and forming an ester linkage. This chain-growth reaction continues, building high-molecular-weight PET molecules.
