An organic substance having the formula (CH3)2NC(O)H is dimethylformamide. Commonly referred to as DMF, this colourless liquid is miscible with water and the majority of organic liquids (although this initialism is occasionally used for dimethylfuran, or dimethyl fumarate).
Only flammable-safe, well-ventilated facilities should be used to store DMF. Only a fume hood with sufficient ventilation should be used while using DMF. If you can smell the DMF, you are being exposed and the hood has not been designed sufficiently to contain it. When using DMF, keep open fires and sparks away from the work area.
